Dover Castle from the East, Dover, Kent, UK

Keep, Inner Bailey and Outer Curtain Wall, Including Avranches Tower (for crossbows) in the center with the round, squat St John's Tower at far right:


Photo taken on a bike ride from Dover to St Margaret's-at-Cliffe.

Ancient monument built 1180s by Maurice the Engineer for King Henry II. 12th Century Norman architecture.

Site formerly had Roman and Saxon fortifications; Outer Curtain Wall built on outline of Iron Age Hill Fort.
